Toddler Proof your Hotel Room: Cheap and Easy to Pack Items
If going to a hotel stresses you out with a mobile baby or toddler, I completely understand! My mom anxiety is intense, but my love for travel is as well. I have developed a list of my favorite products that are cheap, small and easy to pack, that you can use to baby or toddler proof your hotel room – or anywhere you are staying (rented house, family members house, etc!)
Items to Bring with You:
- Outlet protectors.
- Bring a roll of paper tape and some cotton balls. You can easily pad sharp corners by placing a cotton ball over it and securing it with paper tape. This tape is easy to remove.
- Door and Window Alarms. I have seen this type of alarm sold at the Dollar Store before, so you can check there first, but I cannot speak to the quality. I ordered these ones from Amazon and they have lasted many trips. Take the batteries out when not in use and make sure to store in a secure area, as the button batteries are small and dangerous if ingested. I bring extra 3M strips to apply and they work great! I also bring extra batteries just in case. I put the alarms on doors and windows, especially if we are anywhere near water!
What to do when you first enter the hotel room:
- Take photos of where everything goes. (This will be helpful for you when it’s time to put things back!)
- Inspect the room for any dangerous items and areas. Baby proof as needed.
- Make sure all windows and doors are locked. Place anything dangerous and/or breakable in a safe location.
- Get down on your hands and knees and crawl around and look for anything dangerous. I commonly find small items such as change under the bed and under chairs.
- Check under couch and chair cushions for loose items.
- Keep bathroom door shut. If your child can open the door, place a strap or alarm on it.
- Place straps on anything the child can open that they shouldn’t be getting in to.
- Place any weapons in secured safe or an area the child cannot reach.
- Place all dangerous items up high, where they cannot be accessed by your child and where they cannot fall on them. (In rented homes/condos there always seem to be sharp knives in drawers that can be accessed easily by small children!)
- Move any chemicals up high where the child cannot access them. (This is common in rented homes, especially under sinks.)
- If there is a pool or other water nearby, make sure all exits are secured with a lock and alarm.
- When you unpack, make sure to place anything dangerous up high.
This is not an inclusive list, these are some of my favorite ways to baby/toddler proof when we travel. You are responsible for using your best judgement and keeping your child(ren) safe. I will not be held responsible for anything that happens if you use these recommendations. You must still watch your child!
Bonus Tip!
Another safety measure I take is cleaning as much as I can! I try not to be super crazy, and I know the carpet is not clean and there is no way to keep kids off of it, but I clean as many surfaces as I can with wipes and always make sure my child’s hands are washed before eating!
If you use essential oils, I also recommend diffusing your favorite germ fighting oils in your room during your trip! This is the small diffuser I use for traveling and it works great! If you need recommendations on essential oils, I can refer you to someone who can help you, just send me a message!
